The Weekender
Scottish photographer Tom and his wife Andrea bought a small house on the Cathedral Island
situated in the Ratzeburg Lake in the north of Germany and have renovated it from scratch.
They passed the small, run-down house every day, as they themselves also live in Ratzeburg's
old town, and found it very sad to witness the progressive decay at first hand.
One day, however, they had the opportunity to buy the house and didn't have to think twice.
An architect was commissioned for the planning, but the actual renovation was largely carried out by the couple themselves,
with the active support of Andrea's nephew, who has great manual skills.
The result is a light and modern gem with an open-plan layout.
It blends seamlessly into the historic old town centre around the large cathedral, just a stone's throw from the lakeshore.
Today, the couple rent it out to holiday guests who want to sail, swim, row, hike or simply relax.
