Tradition and Modernity
A few years ago, Alexandra, a passionate cook from Austria and her husband Christian, a design aficionado with Italian roots were looking for a home for
themselves and their three children.
After a long search, the creative pair found what they were looking for in the Münsterland region in Germany.
They fell in love with the property at first sight and immediately recognised the dormant potential of the somewhat rundown, over 250-year-old manor house.
They spent three years renovating the country estate, doing much of the work themselves.
Christian sourced historical building materials and furniture in Belgium and the Netherlands.
He has a particular affinity for historic cultural artefacts, as he trades in historical cars...which are his great passion.
The interior walls have been plastered with clay and lots of natural wooden beams and stone tiles have been used to create a wonderful indoor environment.
Wherever possible, old materials have been reused or repaired.
They enlisted the help of garden designer Michael Daldrup to restore the spacious grounds.
The result is a successful example of how an old country estate can be brought into the modern age without neglecting regional traditions.
